California needs more college graduates to ensure a thriving economy and vibrant communities across the state. However, low-income young people—who make up nearly 60 percent of the state’s K-12 students—disproportionately face barriers to college access and completion.
At College Futures Foundation, we believe improving college achievement is central to California’s future, and that college success should be an option for every student. We work to remove systemic and institutional barriers to college degrees, enabling students to access the knowledge, financial aid, and other resources they need to complete their degrees on time and choose their own futures.
By 2018, 63 percent of all job openings will require workers with at least some college education.

Our work concentrates on changes in policies and institutional practices that help all students graduate from college with degrees so that they can choose their own paths in life and be active members of thriving communities across California.
We provide leadership, partnership, and grants for those working in California to open doors and remove the barriers to degrees that disproportionately affect low-income students. We also provide strategic support, networks, and tools that help more students who are underrepresented in higher education access resources they need to be successful.
Established in 2005 via the sale of CHELA, a nonprofit student loan company, College Futures Foundation awards nearly $20 million in grants annually and has an endowment of nearly $500 million. Previously known as College Access Foundation of California, the foundation changed its name in 2015. Together with its grantees and partners, College Futures works towards more graduates for a thriving California.
